„Die Philosophische Entmündigung der Kunst“ ist eines der Hauptwerke des Kunstphilosophen Arthur Coleman Danto. Im fünften Kapitel, überschrieben mit „Das Ende der Kunst“, bringt Danto seine These auf den Punkt, dass sich die Kunst, in der heutzutage alles möglich ist, irgendwann nur noch selbst thematisiert und somit zur Philosophie wird. Damit sei, so Danto, das Ende der Kunst erreicht. Nach seiner Ansicht existiert die Kunst nach dem Ende der Kunst nur durch die sie umgebenden Institutionen. Das Kapitel ist inhaltliche und materielle Grundlage für die gleichnamige Arbeit. Es wurde zerstört und neu geschöpft, enthält mithin in seiner Essenz den fraglichen Text, kann aber möglicherweise neu beschrieben werden. Die Präsentation an der Wand, gleich einem Bild, ist Antwort auf die Institutionstheorie, gegen die sich Danto zwar zu wehren versucht, sich ihr aber in letzter Konsequenz nicht entziehen kann.

The End of Art, 2008

“The Philosophical Disenfranchisement of Art” is one of the major works of art philosopher Arthur Coleman Danto. In the fifth chapter, entitled “The End of Art,” Danto succinctly summarizes his thesis that art, in which anything is possible today, will eventually become solely self-thematizing and thus become philosophy. According to Danto, this marks the end of art. In his view, after the end of art, art exists only through the institutions surrounding it. This chapter forms the content and material basis for the work of the same name. It was destroyed and recreated, thus essentially containing the text in question, but can potentially be rewritten. The presentation on the wall, like a picture, is a response to institutional theory, which Danto attempts to resist but ultimately cannot escape.
