Geomarwiese on the Kiellinie, Kiel
Welcome to VIEW_FIELD 5. This panel is part of an artistic project by artist Ute Diez, which transforms views into artistic reliefs under the theme of “Art in Public Spaces for Visually Impaired People.” The relief depicts a typical view from this location. Braille is integrated into the image.
What you absolutely need to know in advance All VIEW_FIELDS depict water, among other things. Part of the artistic concept is that the water is always depicted in Braille. Since this can be interrupted by objects in the water, the text is also presented in a fragmented manner, poetically addressing the location. Just like the image, everything can only be pieced together. Prepare to be surprised.
The photo shows a relief depicting an underwater world with integrated Braille.
Image description
This panel deviates slightly from the basic concept with its motif, as it shows a view into the water rather than a view into the distance. Therefore, the text depicting the water is mainly located in the upper part of the panel. This is broken up by jellyfish swimming in the water, which can be felt from various perspectives. There is also a cod, which is depicted relatively small because it moves further back in the water than the jellyfish. In the horizontal center of the picture, from the left, an entrance into the water is indicated, which is covered in mussels. If you feel a little further to the left, you will find a starfish on this. Below this are more mussels, algae, and seaweed. If you feel further towards the center from the left, you will feel the suggested seabed. This tapers backwards from the bottom edge of the picture, which indicates the perspective. Approximately in the center of the picture, slightly to the right, directly above the seabed, another cod moves behind the algae depicted on the right. Behind the algae, i.e., further up on the right side of the image from the bottom edge, there is more seaweed.
Let yourself be surprised and read the image again and again, from different perspectives. Hopefully, new contexts of meaning will emerge each time. This search and constant rediscovery represents one of the strategies of artistic perception. I wish you much enjoyment.
